Food allergies and cake enquiries: questions to ask first

Be specific at the start

Explain the actual ingredient concern before a design or price is agreed. ‘Something suitable for everyone’ does not tell a maker what needs to be checked. If a medical food allergy is involved, the person’s healthcare guidance remains important; the website and a cake photograph cannot determine safety for them.

Ingredients and cross-contact are separate questions

A recipe’s ingredient list and the way food is prepared both matter. Cross-contact refers to the unintended introduction of an allergen into another food. Ask about the actual sponge, filling, icing, decorations and preparation arrangements. Do not assume that removing a visible decoration answers all the ingredient questions.

A useful enquiry checklist

• What ingredients are used in each part of the agreed cake?
• Do decorative items introduce additional ingredients?
• What preparation and cross-contact information can the maker confirm?
• What uncertainty remains?
• Has the person with the requirement received enough information before deciding?

Keep the answer attached to the order

Discuss the ingredient questions directly with Mari and keep the confirmed answers in the order conversation. If the information is incomplete, do not treat the design, flavour name or previous order as a guarantee.
