Hand-painted cakes: turn a small idea into a visual brief
Choose a subject, mood and composition for a hand-painted cake. Explore landscape and floral examples without needing to draw the design yourself.

Quick answers
- A clear subject is more useful than a complicated drawing.
- Discuss how the image wraps around the cake.
- Materials, detail and feasibility are confirmed with Mari.
Choose a subject with meaning
A mountain line, pine forest, favourite flower or small doodle can communicate more than a crowded collage. The portfolio includes a mountain-and-pine design with a short personal message. Use that as an example of a subject and a feeling working together, rather than a template that every painted cake must follow.

A scene on the side reads differently from a small illustration on top. If the design wraps around a round cake, only part of it appears in a single photograph. Tell Mari which view matters most: the front of the cake on a table, the moment the box is opened, or a close view of the message. This helps frame the discussion about composition.
Send references with priorities
- One reference for the subject.
- A colour direction or mood.
- The exact short wording.
- What can be simplified if the cake is small.
- Questions about the decoration materials.
A sketch can help with outline and colours, but it cannot reproduce every brush mark. Keep the original hand-painted references with your enquiry so the intended character is not lost in a simplified studio drawing.
Agree the interpretation
Confirm the subject, placement, wording, size and final quote before the order is agreed. If a tiny detail is essential, say so early. A photo of finished artwork does not document the materials or every step of its making. Ask Mari directly about the actual decoration and ingredient questions.
Questions people ask
Do I need to draw the cake myself?
No. A subject reference, palette and clear priorities are a useful starting point.
Can a studio sketch show a painted landscape?
The studio illustrates shape, colour and simple decorations. Keep a real painted reference alongside it.
