Quick answers

  • Confirm the safe storage and serving instructions for your actual cake with Mari.
  • Carry the box flat and level, never on a sloping car seat.
  • During a power cut, keep the fridge door shut.
  • Remove fresh flowers, sticks and toppers before serving.

Why heat is the enemy

Piped cream softens as it warms up, and the finer the piping, the faster it shows. Humidity makes fondant and sugar decorations tacky, and direct sun can soften a border in minutes. Cumilla’s pre-monsoon months are hot and the monsoon is humid, so a little planning goes a long way.

Picking up and carrying your cake

By car

  • Switch the AC on a few minutes before the cake gets in.
  • Put the box on the floor or in a flat boot. Car seats slope, and the cake slides.
  • Take speed breakers slowly and avoid sudden braking.

By CNG or rickshaw

  • A seated passenger may support a level box; the driver or rider must keep their hands free. Confirm the transport arrangement with Mari.
  • Keep it out of direct sun, even for a short ride.
  • Go straight to your destination; this isn’t the trip for errands.

Timing

In summer, avoid collecting a cake in the middle of the day if you can. Plan the pickup so the cake goes from my box to your fridge with as little waiting as possible.

At home: fridge tips

  • Clear a flat shelf before you leave to collect the cake.
  • Keep the cake in its box, away from strong-smelling food like fish or onions. Cream picks up smells.
  • Ask Mari whether this recipe and its decorations can be frozen.
  • Ask Mari when to take this cake out for serving; keep cakes requiring refrigeration safely cold.

When the power goes out

For a cake that requires refrigeration, ask Mari about safe storage for its actual ingredients. An unopened refrigerator keeps food cold for about four hours according to FDA power-outage guidance.

  • Keep the refrigerator closed during an outage.
  • A cool room does not replace refrigeration. Arrange another cold source if safe cold storage cannot be maintained.
  • Use the food-safety guidance to assess refrigerated perishables; do not taste food to test whether it is safe.

The CDC’s outage guidance explains when refrigerated perishable food should be discarded. A cake’s appearance cannot establish its safety.

At the venue

Keep cakes requiring refrigeration safely cold at the venue until serving, following Mari’s instructions for the actual cake. A cool indoor room or shaded stage does not replace refrigeration.

  • No fan or stage light pointed straight at the cake
  • A covered table if there are insects around
  • One person in charge of carrying it, with clear hands and a clear path

Fresh flowers, toppers and candles

Fresh roses, baby’s breath, sticks, ribbons and acrylic toppers are for looking, not eating. Remove them before serving. Blow out candles quickly and lift them out before cutting so wax doesn’t drip onto the cream.

Leftovers

Follow the storage and leftover instructions for your actual cake. Confirm refrigeration, serving and any freezing questions with Mari; do not assume one shelf-life rule fits every recipe.

Questions people ask

How long can a cream cake stay outside the fridge?

Confirm serving instructions for the actual ingredients with Mari. Keep cakes requiring refrigeration safely cold and follow the linked food-safety guidance for perishables.

Can I carry a cake in a CNG or rickshaw?

Discuss safe, level transport with Mari. A seated passenger may support the box; the driver or rider must keep their hands free. Minimise heat and travel time.

Is the cake safe during a power cut?

Keep the refrigerator closed. FDA guidance says an unopened fridge keeps food cold for about four hours. A cool room is not a substitute for refrigeration; follow the linked FDA and CDC guidance on refrigerated perishables.

Can I freeze my decorated cake?

Ask Mari about the actual recipe and decorations before freezing the cake or leftover slices. One storage rule does not fit every cake.
